Today we start a tour of Van Patten Woods, the first forest preserve in Lake County.

It stretches from the Wisconsin border to Route 173, about two miles, covering 975 acres.

It is also the beginning of the Des Plaines River Trail.

The lake was so blue and the plants so green!

In the middle of the preserve is Sterling Lake, a large multi-purpose lake that was an open gravel pit originally. Ongoing restoration is still helping the area recover after the severe scarring caused by the mining.

We couldn’t tell. It all looked good to us!

Today and tomorrow will be photos from around the lake, since that’s where we walked first.

I thought the clouds looked kinda neat that day, too.

Compass plants seemed to be the only thing in bloom that day
