Back to Lyons Woods –
There is a nice 2.5-mile loop to walk here, so we did it twice. We could have added a stretch out to another trail that links with it, but that was all in the sun, which was warm again, so we decided against it (OK, I decided against it – the hubby could walk twice as far as I, with half as much water. Hmph.)
We saw a lot of different birds on this hike. Beside the goldfinches (they were everywhere we went), there were chipping sparrows, tree swallows, woodpeckers, and tree sparrows. I saw a towhee at one point, and an indigo bunting sitting on a stump (bad photos).
There is what they call a bird observation area, a nice little viewing stand with binoculars. Both times around, we sat and rested here, looking for birds. Didn’t really see anything out in the brush, but in the empty branches above us, there was a hummingbird! It would flit out every now and then but mostly sat looking around. It was in silhouette against the sky, but I assume it was a ruby-throated – I don’t think there are any others in our area.
Looks like I can get one more post out of this trip, so…
…to be continued
